GSB agenda slim for meeting

The student regent for the Board of Regents will make a presentation at Wednesday’s Government of the Student Body meeting.

Jenny Rokes, a junior in history education at the University of Northern Iowa, will introduce herself to the senate and inform senators of her role and what she hopes to accomplish, said William Rock, GSB vice president.

Rock said Rokes will play an integral role in the relationship GSB has with the Board of Regents.

“Being a student, she is that much closer to ground zero, so she knows more about what is going on,” Rock said.

Even though Rokes has the same duties as the other eight regents, Rock said her hands-on experience with students gives her the knowledge that drives GSB to go to her first when voicing its concerns. He said the other eight regents carry full-time jobs, and don’t have as much time as Rokes to experience the campus environment directly. Rock said Rokes will often come to Iowa universities’ student governments, such as GSB, to ask for input on the plans she is working on.

The board has nine members, each appointed by Gov. Tom Vilsack and approved by the state Legislature. No more than five regents can be of the same gender, and no more than five can be affiliated with the same political party.

Rock said GSB has so far worked with Rokes on decisions made by the Board of Regents concerning tuition and fees policies. They will work together in the future in lobbying the state Legislature to gain full funding for Iowa’s universities.

Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger said the agenda will be pretty slim for the meeting other than the presentation.

He said one bill will be presented seeking to fund Iowa State’s Celtic Dance Society’s rental of a Suburban to travel to a dance festival.

The meeting will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
