Local police arrest five in connection with meth labs

Editor’s Note: A correction was added to this article Sept. 1.
Due to editing errors, the Aug. 31 article “Local police arrest six in connection with meth labs” contained several errors. The original headline of the article incorrectly stated six people were arrested. Five people were arrested in connection with police investigations into methamphetamine during the weekend. Also, the article incorrectly implied that Matthew Heubrock of Aurelia was charged with possession of methamphetamine. He was charged with possession of marijuana and had no connection to the methamphetamine investigations. The Daily regrets these errors.
When Boone County Sheriff’s Office officials apprehended Jeremy Sime, 22, alleging he was attempting to steal anhydrous ammonia near Luther early Saturday morning, it was just the beginning of a string of events that would lead to the arrest of four others and the discovery of a working meth lab being operated from the garage of Sime’s grandparents’ home.
After catching Sime attempting to steal the ammonia, members of the Central Iowa Drug Task Force searched his Ames residence with members of the Ames Police Department.
There, they found methamphetamine, as well as paraphernalia and items used for manufacturing the drug.
Elizabeth Litzel, 19, was at the home with John Swanson, 39, of Nevada, when police arrived.
The home’s third resident, Abraham Stone, arrived later. All were charged with possession of methamphetamine.
Then, officers, acting on information that Sime was manufacturing the drug at his grandparent’s residence at 2202 Furman Dr., searched the house and found every item necessary to make methamphetamine.
Inside the home, officers found crushed pseudoephedrine pills, peeled lithium batteries, muriatic acid, coolers, gas cans, jars with coffee filters, rubber tubing and tin foil.
Officers then stopped a vehicle that had been seen during both searches. The vehicle’s driver, Matthew Heubrock, 20, of Aurelia, was arrested and charged with possession.
All except Stone were released.
A few hours later, with the investigation and arrests in the Sime case finished, task force officers were tipped off about an individual buying a large amount of pseudoephedrine in the past week.
This led to another tip later that the same individual had bought more of the substance and was with a female wanted on outstanding warrants.
Ames police stopped a vehicle driven by the suspect near the 300 block of Lincoln Way.
Police arrested Steven Porter, 38, of Fort Dodge, and Christy Byerly, 33, no permanent address, and charged them with possession of methamphetamine precursors and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.
Both remained in custody Monday night.
