Second accident in same location leads Ames police to issue citations

One day after police responded to a three-car pile-up on the eastern side of Lincoln Way and Duff Avenue, there was another in the same area at nearly the same time, responding Ames Police officers said.

Four cars were involved in a collision at roughly 4:45 p.m. on Friday, and two people were treated at the scene for minor head and neck injuries.

The area is becoming a hot spot for traffic accidents, said responding Ames police officer David Schultz.

The frequency of collisions have caused police to give citations to those involved for not allowing themselves enough time to stop.

“People get in this rush hour traffic, and they follow too close when they don’t need to,” Schultz said. “They kind of forget what they learned in driver’s [education].”

On Friday, a Ford Bronco driven by Loren Arnold Hunter stopped to turn left onto Des Moines Avenue, and another Ford, driven by Larry Alan Snavely, stopped behind him. However, an oncoming cement truck, owned by Iowa State Ready Mix, was unable to stop in time. The cement truck collided with the second car, propelling the second car into the first car.

Following the cement truck, Marie Stagg’s Oldsmobile smashed into the back of the mixer, shattering the windshield and showering her with glass.

No one was seriously hurt in the crash, Schultz said, but Hunter and Snavely were treated on the scene for minor head and neck injuries.

Stagg watched as they drove the cement mixer away, her windshield crackling as the mixer’s back bumper, which was lodged above the crumpled hood of her car only moments ago, was pulled from her car. Beside her sat a child safety seat.

Thankfully, Stagg’s child was not in her car when she collided with the Iowa State Ready Mix cement truck. Stagg was on her way to pick up her baby when the accident occurred.
