Building, fire codes on council’s agenda for Tuesday meeting
July 26, 2004
The possibility of a new mall in Ames will make another small step at this week’s city council meeting.
The Ames City Council will vote Tuesday on the second passage of an ordinance amending zoning for the proposed mall near Interstate 35 and 13th Street. The ordinance will simply lay the essential groundwork for the structure, council members said.
“It sets design standards for the area,” Councilman Steve Goodhue said. “I think we’ve already had a majority of the discussion.”
In other business, the council will concentrate on adopting international building, residential and fire codes and making text amendments to the Southeast Gateway Overlay District zoning ordinance.
“The codes will update local codes to match international standards,” Councilman Matthew Goodman said.
The City Council will also look at text amendments to the Southeast Gateway Overlay District zoning ordinance, the entryway area near U.S. Highway 30 and Interstate 35.
According to city documents, the amendment deals with the types and uses of buildings allowed in the area, since it is a major gateway to Ames. If the amendment passes, pre-engineered metal buildings and certain uses such as broadcasting or adult entertainment will be prohibited.
A moratorium to temporarily halt demolition and development in Campustown will not be on the agenda, Goodhue said. There may be some comments about it during the public forum. The ordinance was defeated at the July 13 meeting and will not be reconsidered by the council until August 10.
The council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers in City Hall.
