Cy-Man Triathlon set for August
July 28, 2004
You too can perform like an all-star Aug. 29 in the first annual Cy-Man Triathlon.
Students, athletes and faculty at Iowa State or anyone else in the Ames area who would like to perform in the triathlon are invited to enter the contest at Hickory Grove Park.
Cy-Man is a sprint distance triathlon. The race begins with a 400-yard swim, followed by a 15.5-mile bike ride and finishing with a 3.1-mile run.
The Cy-Man Triathlon is being put on by the ISU Triathlon Club. Club race director Alex Syhlman said this is the first year for the Cy-Man Triathlon.
“For five years we used to have a duathlon. That was a 12-kilometer run, 15-kilometer bike ride and a 2-kilometer run,” Syhlman said. “We always wanted to have a triathlon but couldn’t find a place in Ames. This is a little farther but not too far out of town.”
The ISU Triathlon club is contracting a chip-timing company that will provide all participants splits for swimming, transition one, biking, transition two and running. Participants will also receive a race T-shirt, a water bottle and a race bag.
The awards this year are locker-room towels, which are screen-printed with the race logo by the sponsor, Dogtown University, 108 Hayward Ave. Skunk River Cycles, 308 Main St., has also donated door prizes and money to the race.
The race will also serve as the Intramural Triathlon Competition.
Students can sign up for free through the intramural department starting Aug. 16, but they won’t receive the race T-shirt, water bottle, race bag, post-race food, awards, etc. unless they sign up through the Triathlon Club and pay the $40 entry fee.
The price for an individual with USA Triathlon Membership is $40.00, individuals without USA Triathlon membership pay $49.00 and $95.00 for a team. Syhlman said that it’s smart to get the membership.
“If anyone gets hurt during the triathlon, the USAT will pay for any injuries,” Syhlman said.
Participants can register online at http://www.scc.iastate.edu/~triath/cyman/ until Aug. 27.
Participants in Ames can pick up a registration form at the Lied Recreational Center, 2220 State Gym, the Red Cross, Skunk River Cycles or Bike World, 126 S. 3rd St.
