Future is bright for Cedar Valley running club

NEVADA — High school track. High school times.
Not high school runners.
The Cedar Valley Track Club of Cedar Falls used the Iowa Games as preparation for other meets Saturday at Nevada High School.
Club coach and father Steve Fagerlind said some 13- and 14-year-old members of the club are already running high school times.
“I have been coaching this group for three years now, and they just keep improving,” Fagerlind said. “It is just a pleasure.”
Fagerlind, of Denver, Iowa, said some of the members of the track club have some bigger meets in the next couple of months.
“We have some girls that will compete in the [Amateur Athletic Union] Nationals at Drake University on Aug. 2 and the U.S. Track Junior Olympic Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Sept. 21,” Fagerlind said.
“My daughter Becca, Julian Jones, Blair [Dinsdale] and Brooke Dinsdale will compete at those meets in the [3,200]-meter relay event.”
Fagerlind, of Traer, said the four girls will not be intimidated in the big meets.
“They have been [to national meets] before, but this year they are gunning for a national title in the [3,200] relay,” Fagerlind said.
“Last year, they were in the younger half of their age bracket and finished 16th in the whole country.
“They have the fifth- and sixth-best time in the nation in the 800 meters.”
Fagerlind’s daughter, Becca, participated in five events and received three medals at the Iowa Games. She said she has bigger goals for the rest of the summer.
“Our goal is to get a national title in the [3,200] relay,” Becca said.
The Dinsdale girls have a unique sibling rivalry since they are twins. Blair said Brooke is a tad faster and is her best competition. The twins’ father, Mark Dinsdale, agreed that they are indeed each other’s best competition.
“They push and pull a lot. This year Brooke is a little faster, but last year it was Blair,” Mark said. “They are starting to get in different events because they want to get away from each other.”
Mark also said the sibling rivalry benefits both of his girls.
“They are best friends and first enemies; they just want to beat each other,” Mark said.
“They just keep pushing each other.”
Another coach, former Dallas Cowboy running back Norm Granger, said the twins have a bright future in track.
“They will dominate next year. You will hear about them in high school,” Granger said. “I have seen a lot of good runners, but the twins will be something to look at in the future.”
The Dinsdale twins placed first and second in their events at the Iowa Games.
Granger said the club has been going on about seven years, when he and Fagerlind had a couple of girls that wanted to run. He said the ages range from seven to 18 years.
Granger said it is fun to watch the young girls run.
“Luckily, we have good coaches,” Granger said.
“[The girls] run at the Cedar Valley Track Club. We don’t mess around.”
Granger said the Iowa Games is a fun meet for members of the club.
“They all got a lot of medals and all do well here,” Granger said. “This is our fun meet. We bring some kids out here and try some new events.”
Becca Fagerlind said the Iowa Games is one of the most fun track meets of the year.
Her father said the meet is a good opportunity to achieve high placings.
“They all love it because they get to do whatever they want here. They have fun and always do well,” Fagerlind said.
“They all win medals real easy and are all running high school times now.”
