Wisconsin man turns himself in after warrant issued

Editor’s note: A clarification was added to this article June 10.

Due to a reporting error, the June 8 article “Wisconsin man turns himself in after warrant issued” did not fully identify Diego Alexander Vega, who was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal mischief. Vega was an ISU student during the spring 2004 semester. He is no longer listed in the online ISU phone directory, and the Office of the Registrar could not be reached late Wednesday. The Daily regrets the error.

The Story County Sheriff’s Office has made another arrest relating to the April 18 riot in Campustown.

Diego Alexander Vega, 21, of Hudson, Wis., turned himself in to the sheriff’s office at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

He was charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, which is a Class D felony that could carry a penalty of up to $7,500 or five years in prison. He was arrested and booked in the Story County Jail.

Vega was one of three men wanted in connection with the vandalism of a Story County patrol car that had been parked in the area of the riot.

The dashboard video camera of the patrol car had been left on, and several individuals were recorded attempting to overturn the vehicle.

The car reportedly sustained more than $7,500 in damage from the assault, with several dents to the body and damage sustained to its windows, light bar and radio.

Vega was released later after posting $10,000 in bond.

Police are still seeking information about another person recorded by the video camera, a white male with dark hair, large sideburns and of a larger build.

Sgt. Dave Lekwa of the Story County Sheriff’s Office said Vega, currently living in Wisconsin, turned himself in after learning that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Although he declined to name the person who identified Vega from the widely circulated tape, Lekwa said that tips and information from the Ames community have been the primary tool used to capture Veishea rioters who have been caught on film.
