Others cap season in disappointing fashion

ISU seniors Susan Sherman and Sheba Clarke ended their hopes of competing at nationals with disappointing finishes at the Midwest Track and Field Regional Championship this weekend.
Sherman finished 21st in the discus and 15th in the hammer throw, and Clarke finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, missing a chance to compete in the finals.
Women’s head coach Dick Lee said there were some athletes who struggled at the regional meet, held in College Station, Texas.
“This was Susan’s [Sherman] first big meet without a big performance, which was frustrating. Sheba [Clarke] did not make it through the prelims. Her event (the 100-meter dash) was one of the strongest events there,” Lee said. “Ada [Anderson] made the finals [in the 800-meter run], but struggled in the last 250 meters.”
Anderson said she was disappointed that she didn’t get in the top five at regionals. She finished eighth in the 800.
“That was one of my main goals all season,” Anderson said. “But I can’t dwell on it. I am just looking forward to next season.”
Anderson said she learned something about herself at this regional meet.
“I think that I think about my races too much,” Anderson said. “I need to relax and taste what regionals is like.”
Sprints coach Scott Roberts said he also noticed a few things from the women’s competitions.
“This was Sara Boisen’s first trip to the regionals, which are always a little intimidating. But I am excited about her future. It was just a long year with a lot of success for Ada, but she has a lot of good years left,” Roberts said. “Jenny [Mockler] ran the first half of the 800 well but faded towards the end. She had a reasonable time of 2:11.”
Mockler believes that she and Anderson will make it to nationals next year. She said she thought this meet was beneficial to many.
“[Regionals] was a good bonding and good experience for everyone for next year,” Mockler said. “I learned a lot.”
Jumps coach Ron McEachran watched senior Daniel Kaczmarczyk perform in his last outdoor track meet at Iowa State.
“Daniel made the finals in the triple jump. He got ninth place, but his timing was just off. If your timing is off, that affects your performance. Also I think the 93-degree heat got to him. That is something that he wasn’t used to,” McEachran said.
“This didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but he will be back and compete in his last indoor season next year.”
