Tight athletic budget attributed to cuts, lost seventh home game
June 14, 2004
One less home football game, increased mandatory athletic fees and higher basketball ticket prices are all part of the fiscal year 2005 ISU athletic department budget prepared for this week’s Board of Regents meeting in Okoboji.
Additionally, ISU athletic programs will face a 3.7 percent overall spending decrease in the coming year, according to the budget.
The decline in the budget is due, at least in part, on what the report calls “conservative goals for ticket sales to offset the budgeted expenditures that include tuition and fee increases.”
Overall sports income is projected to be up 4.9 percent due to a projected increase in game attendance and group sales.
However, the category that includes Big 12 Conference revenue and the television income is down by 9.6 percent.
Big 12 Conference revenue is budgeted to decline by $266,056.
General public football season ticket prices will decrease from $215 to $199 this year due to the shorter season. Instead of the 12-game regular season used in 2002 and 2003, the Cyclones will play only 11 games this fall due to NCAA rules. Iowa State has only six home games, down from seven each of the last two years.
Home game ticket prices will be $60 for the game with Nebraska, $35 for games with Texas A&M, Kansas and Missouri and $30 for games with Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois.
Since the Sept. 11 game against Iowa in Iowa City will not be televised regionally, Iowa State stands to lose even more revenue.
