May 19, 2004
Iowa State’s director of basketball operations, Darryl Sharp, was promoted to assistant coach last week to replace Fred Quartlebaum, who accepted an assistant position at St. John’s in New York.
In his first season with the Cyclones, Sharp was in charge of recruiting, academic progress and various other administrative duties. As an assistant coach, Sharp will deal with various responsibilities that men’s basketball coach Wayne Morgan said each coach within the program handles. Morgan said these responsibilities deal with “every facet of coaching,” encompassing academics, recruiting and conditioning.
“This is a great opportunity for me,” Sharp said in a press release. “I have the utmost respect for Coach Morgan and I thoroughly enjoyed my first year at Iowa State. I learned a lot under Coach Morgan’s leadership and I look forward to making contributions to ISU’s continued success.”
Morgan said he wanted to retain some continuity within the program after Quartlebaum’s departure, in part because of the high turnover in the program within the last two years.
“[Retaining continuity] was part of [the selection],” Morgan said. “He was somebody who knew the kids, he knew the program, he knew what we were trying to do here.”
Sharp is no stranger to the job as an assistant coach. During the 2002-03 season, Sharp served as an assistant at Norfolk State, arranging all recruiting visits for the staff and developing prospect lists, and coordinating film exchange
Before his stint in Norfolk, Sharp spent two seasons as an administrative assistant to Hall of Fame coach Denny Crum at Louisville. Sharp was instrumental in recruiting All-American Reese Gaines, who left Louisville as the third-best scorer in Conference USA history.
Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, Sharp was an assistant at Washburn High School in Minneapolis and served as an assistant coach for Team Minnesota/Team Pulley, the top American Athletic Union basketball program in Minnesota. Sharp coached players including Troy Bell and Adam Boone while assisting Howard Pulley.
