Lyons misses nationals by one stroke

Senior Jeremy Lyons’ career on the ISU golf team came to a climactic end at the NCAA Golf Central Regional in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday.

Lyons just missed a chance to qualify for the national meet by one stroke. His three rounds of 74-74-75 left him with a 7-over-par score of 223. The two individual qualifiers — A.J. Elgert of Kansas State and Jeff Overton of Indiana — both carded scores of 222.

Missing a shot at nationals by one stroke could be frustrating, but Lyons said he was not upset. He was very satisfied with his final performance as a Cyclone.

“I feel pretty good about only being one point away. I wasn’t even sure I was going to make regionals. I thought that my last round [at the collegiate level] was going to be at the Big 12 conference,” Lyons said. “Only six individuals in the country make nationals. To only be one shot away from making nationals, I feel really good.”

Lyons said since golf is an individual sport, it didn’t affect him that he was the only ISU athlete at West Lafayette. He also said things might have been different if he would have had a better start.

“I played pretty solid at this tournament,” Lyons said. “In the first seven holes, I had a bad start (5 over par). If I would have had a better start, I think that I could have made nationals.”

Lyons has progressed through his golfing career at Iowa State. After finishing his freshman season with a 77.0 stroke average, he went on to win three tournaments in his next three seasons as a Cyclone. Lyons shot a 211 to medal at the Branson Creek Invitational his sophomore year, tying the ISU low-round record of 66. He also brought home first-place honors at the Fairway Club Invitational his junior year and the ASU Indian Classic this season.

Since he is finished playing collegiately, Lyons looked back fondly at his career.

“Nothing individually sticks out, but I have steadily improved throughout my career,” He said. “I have won a tournament in all of the past three years. Also, I was very close to getting the average scoring record [at Iowa State]. I have just had a lot of positives.”
