LETTER: Brown deserves compassion

There was a recent study that concluded over 80 percent of Iowa drivers break the speed limit. Traffic engineers and police officers are very careful in choosing the correct speed for a particular thoroughfare. While automobiles are a wonderful luxury, when used improperly they are dangerous and even deadly.

From this I conclude that violating speed laws, like your description of Randy Brown’s act of downloading child pornography, is “a crime of violence.” I hold the same opinion for those who roll through stop signs and careen through traffic.

Yet I choose to view reckless drivers with care and concern, and search for small and large ways to help them overcome their confusion about highway safety. Chronic traffic law violators and Randy Brown deserve our endless, boundless and unlimited compassion.
