Sanderson qualifies for Olympics with win over Fullhart
May 24, 2004
After a loss in the finals of the freestyle national tournament in Las Vegas, Cael Sanderson buckled down and took care of business.
The 184-pound former Cyclone trounced the competition in the preliminary competition and then Sunday avenged a loss to 2004 freestyle national champion Lee Fullhart in the U.S. Olympic Trials final in Indianapolis.
Sanderson beat Fullhart 3-1 in the first match of their best-of-three series.
He took the lead 3-0 before Fullhart was awarded a point after a Sanderson caution.
Fullhart won the second match in overtime. He was awarded the victory by referee decision with the final score showing 2-2.
Sanderson bounced back in the nightcap with a 4-1 victory to make his Olympic dream a reality.
The four-time undefeated collegiate champion has won three freestyle national championships, and will now fight for Olympic gold in Athens, Greece, in August.
Sanderson and ISU head coach Bobby Douglas will represent the Cyclones — Douglas was selected in April as an assistant for the Olympic Freestyle Team.
Former Cyclone wrestler and current assistant coach Chris Bono ended his dreams of Olympic competition when he bowed out of the tournament with a second-round loss to Jared Lawrence.
Bono, the top seed in the challenge tournament, received a bye to the second round, where he lost 3-1 to Lawrence.
Former Cyclone Joe Heskett was also a top seed in the challenge tournament. He won the preliminary tournament but lost both of his matches to 2004 freestyle national champion Joe Williams, a former Iowa wrestler.
Zach Roberson, the current Cyclone team’s only departing wrestler in the starting lineup, struggled after finishing seventh at the freestyle national championships.
The 2004, 133-pound collegiate champion was seeded seventh, and ended the tournament with a 10-4 loss to ninth seed Celso DeAnda.
The surprise of the tournament was one of the youngest competitors in men’s freestyle.
Nate Gallick, wrestling in Roberson’s weight class at 132 pounds, finished third in the preliminary tournament.
The ISU sophomore, seeded 11th, beat sixth seed, Jason Kutz, 3-0 in first round. He then faced Danny Felix and lost 2-1 before winning three consolation matches.
