Golfer in coma after accident

ISU men’s golfer Tyler Swanson remained in a coma Monday after successful surgery for head trauma in Iowa City. He and teammate Curtis Foster were injured early Sunday morning in a car accident on Interstate 80.

Foster, a freshman from Independence, is in fair condition and recovering after suffering a fractured vertebrae, according to ISU athletic department officials. He will begin rehabilitation Tuesday morning.

Swanson, according to the ISU athletic department, exited surgery about 5:30 p.m. Monday. The Clinton sophomore and Foster remain at University Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

A Poweshiek County sheriff’s office dispatcher said Grinnell hospital officials were performing CPR on Swanson and Foster before they were transported to Iowa City, according to the Associated Press. Other details about the accident were not available.

“These last two days have been extremely difficult,” said ISU men’s golf coach Jay Horton in an athletic department press release. “However, the unbelievable support for Tyler and Curtis from the Iowa State family, the state of Iowa and the national golfing community has been a great blessing. With your continued support and prayers, we are optimistic for a successful outcome.”

The press release indicated no more information about Swanson and Foster would be made available Monday.
