LETTER: Transferring power from Judicial Affairs
April 5, 2004
On Friday, members of the Government of the Student Body Senate met with Dean of Students Pete Englin and Director of the Office of Judicial Affairs Bethany Schuttinga to discuss the Student Disciplinary Regulations. Everyone involved came with an open mind to discuss potential changes to the judicial process so as to best serve the student population.
The main aspect of the judicial process that was discussed was changes to the All University Judiciary.
The AUJ currently handles cases that are deemed to be “major” in nature. The AUJ is authorized to recommend the full range of sanctions (disciplinary reprimand through expulsion).
All parties agreed that it would be beneficial to pursue the possibility of allowing the Office of Judicial Affairs to refer minor cases to AUJ in which the sanction recommendation would not exceed deferred suspension.
This would allow utmost fairness and eliminate even perceived improprieties in the judicial process.
As GSB members, we hope to garner support from the rest of GSB for working with the Office of Judicial Affairs both on this project and in the future to ensure continued communication will result in a process that has not only the best interest of students in mind, but that of the university as a whole.
