LETTER: Students should take back Veishea
April 27, 2004
President Geoffroy has just announced that he will be suspending Veishea for one year.
I am not involved in the planning of Veishea, but it was my understanding that this was a student-organized event. If this is the case, let the students organize the parade and other activities anyway.
The city needs only to approve the route for the parade, which may prove difficult given the circumstances, but the parade is mainly for families and children.
You may not be able to have booths and such set up on university property, but there are a number of greek houses with lawns more than suitable to set up booths and family-oriented activities.
And if that is not an option, there are parks around the city that could be used.
I say all this not only because I don’t want to see Veishea canceled, but because it would be an excellent way to rebuild trust in the community.
To show that students are not just looking for a reason to get drunk and unruly.
That we want to celebrate Veishea for what it was, and what it can be again.
Veishea is a great event and a great tradition, and if the students are truly upset because of these reasons, I say we should prove it.
