LETTER: Veishea not the problem to solve

Suspending Veishea was a well-thought-out idea that will achieve the intended goals.

Next year there will not be any Veishea riot.

Guaranteed.

If all our policy makers used such sensible logic, we might not have many of the problems that we have today.

Given the strong correlation between alcohol-related driving accidents and New Year’s, we should cancel New Year’s Day as a national holiday as well.

Heck, while we are at it, we should shut down the aviation industry.

That way we can be sure terrorists won’t be able to fly planes into our buildings!

I guess we should probably ban ice cream sales as well, because it is always the case that drownings increase as ice cream sales increase.

Is New Year’s the problem? No, idiots who drink and drive are the problem.

Are planes the problem? No, terrorists are the problem. Are ice cream sales the reason for an increase in drownings?

No, more people swim in the summer time — the same season ice cream sales are up!

Just because there is a link between the two doesn’t mean one causes the other.

It is time to identify and solve the real problem — Veishea is not the problem!

But I guess we have an extra year to do that now.
