LETTER: Professor responds to gay-bashing letter

As one of the openly gay professors here at Iowa State, I was very offended by the letter by freshman RJ Green (April 28 letter, “Ban alcohol along with Veishea”). It is actually part of a much larger problem here at Iowa State.

Certain right-wing ultra-conservative students want to control what you do, they want to ban what you read, limit with whom you associate, dictate what you think, censor what a professor can say, and now — to return to prohibiting liquor altogether here in Ames.

Last year “Dean of Fags” was scrawled on the Dean of Students office building. As a former Veishea Faculty of the Year, I, personally, am sad to see this celebration end this way. Too bad some know-it-all freshman morality squad type wants to ban it.

How long have you lived in Ames, Mr. Green? Who do you think you are to denigrate what you label as “liberal-talking, booze-drinking, body-piercing queer-advocating, curse-spouting” people?

Why does the paper allow queer baiting to be printed in the first place? How about “nigger-loving bastards” for those who associate with blacks? How about “Christ-killing Kikes” to designate Jews? How about “fat-assed stupid bitches” to describe women? Your narrow labeling is a mark of your lack of intelligence.

If you want a “nice old-fashioned town,” as you claim Ames once was, why don’t you go back to wherever you came from? A “modern day Sodom,” as you describe it — this Ames is not.

This is just exactly the way that Nazi youth described liberal Wiemar democracy in Germany before they began their reign of terror.
