LETTER: Christian educators not intolerant
April 14, 2004
Christian Educators Association International is a professional association for Christian educators in the public and private schools.
Our intent to be inclusive of all those bearing the title Christian, but clearly define in our statement of faith who we are serving. It is not our intent to be inclusive of all, but to encourage, equip, and empower our members to positively impact their schools as they live out their faith.
We encourage them to demonstrate God’s love and truth in that educational community where they serve — a lifestyle that breaks no laws.
Many falsely believe that the Constitution forbids Christians to live out their faith in our school — not true. Although it is clear that Christians, or any governmental employees, may not force their beliefs on their charges, they certainly can, and we believe should, approach their duties from a Christian world view.
This great nation was built on a Christian foundation with our forefathers developing a document meant to protect that foundation.
Some have tried to force their own spiritual bankruptcy on others by sanitizing our history of its Christian heritage to achieve some level of political correctness, but we must object to such skewed thinking. Our Constitution clearly prohibits the government from establishing a religion or inhibiting the expression of religion.
It is actually this document that guarantees that our schools should not be considered religion free zones, as to do so would require the level of governmental entanglement the Constitution was meant to prevent.
We are not in any way suggesting or encouraging our members to force their beliefs on their students or peers.
We believe that the Christianity we embrace is more than a belief system that should be taught — we believe it to be way of living that can not be separated from the individual — it should affect everything, including our professions.
In so doing we are not suggesting intolerance to others beliefs, but are at the same time should not be expected to compromise ours.
We would be happy to supply anyone with a copy of the booklet “A Teacher’s Guide to Religion In Public Schools” endorsed by 19 organizations. These organizations include American Jewish Congress, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Council on Islamic Education, National Education Association, and the National School Board Association.
