Tennis team ends regular season

The ISU women’s tennis team closes its regular season with three matches this weekend.

The Cyclones (5-10, 0-8 Big 12) will face the No. 44 Baylor Bears (11-10, 7-3) Friday in Ames.

The match will begin at 10 a.m. at the Forker Courts. In case of inclement weather, the Ames Racquet & Fitness Center will host play.

The Cyclones then travel to Oklahoma to face No. 19 Oklahoma (17-3, 6-2) on Saturday and Oklahoma State (6-12, 1-7) on Sunday. The teams were supposed to meet in February, but a snowstorm prevented the Cyclones from traveling.

“Baylor is the defending Big 12 champion, Oklahoma is a top-20 team and Oklahoma State has been in the top 25 over the last two or three years,” ISU head coach Michele Conlon said. “This is a great chance for us to compete against some strong teams.”

Friday’s match is the final home match for Cyclone senior Sabrina Evers. Evers has spent the year playing in both the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles slots for the Cyclones.

“Sabrina has been outstanding as a player and person,” Conlon said. “She’s had some tremendous wins over the course of her career, and she’s been on the academic all-Big 12 first team the last two years.

“Sabrina is the type of player you’d want in your program all the time.”

Evers has also helped her teammates grow, sophomore Beth Chermel said.

“Sabrina has a lot more experience than the rest of the team, so she’s brought a different perspective on team leadership,” Chermel said.

The Cyclones have been working on a variety of things in practice, Conlon said.

“We’ve done different things on different days. One day we worked on doubles, one day we worked on ground strokes,” Conlon said.

“At this point in the season I try to get input from the student-athletes about what parts of their game they want to work on.”

“We’ve been working on individual needs,” Chermel said. “With a lot of play this weekend, we’ve been trying not to overdo it.”

As the season winds down, Cyclone players are trying to pull out a couple more wins.

“Everybody is playing a lot better toward the end of the season,” sophomore Eve Soriano said. “People have been working harder to get wins in. We want to compete really well and come out with wins.”

Conlon agreed.

“We want to feel good about our games individually as we go into the Big 12 tournament,” she said.
