LETTER: Senate participated in backdoor deals

The Daily editorial in Thursday’s (April 15, “Back-room deals don’t suit GSB”) paper was devoid of certain key facts. The only member of senate named was Drew Miller, a former off- campus senator. The members of the senate who knew of this back-door deal, which includes me, were just as responsible for its execution as Miller.

As members of an organization with a checkbook balance of $1.4 million, we have a responsibility to ensure the respectability of this group and the actions it takes on.

All of the members of the senate had a responsibility to speak out against this deal during the debate when Iowa State Public Interest Research Group and Team PrISUm were being discussed.

Everyone who knew and or participated in this action is to blame for the tarnish left by this action. Former senator Tony Luken had no right to point fingers at other senators for their actions, as he himself admitted to knowing of the deal before it took place. He or anyone else could have brought it to the floor and broken the whole operation and for that, all informed members of senate are to blame for this folly.

On a second note, Drew Miller was not the person to announce his intent to sue PrISUm if ISPIRG did not receive funding. That statement was made by Matt Denner but was never reported as such.

Instead, the Daily has made Drew Miller the fall guy of a senate that unfortunately failed in its duty to represent students and ensure respect from those outside the organization. For my part, I apologize to my off-campus constituents whom I failed in that regard.
