LETTER: Only Electoral College chose Bush
April 27, 2004
Daniel Snodgrass wrote sarcastically on April 27 that “well-informed leftists” claim President Bush was not elected by the American people (April 26 letter, “Democrats support draft reinstatement”).
Unbeknownst to himself, Mr. Snodgrass was right!
The Electoral College elected President Bush in 2000 by a vote of 271-266, after several Supreme Court decisions.
Mr. Snodgrass forgot that more American people voted for Al Gore, by a score of 50,999,897 to 50,456,002. This situation wasn’t unique to the 2000 election — it also happened in 1824, 1876, and 1888. On behalf of the plurality of voters who chose Gore in 2000, I thank Mr. Snodgrass for recognizing that we are well-informed.
