Tennis team goes winless in Big 12 for second year
April 26, 2004
The ISU women’s tennis team ended the regular season winless in Big 12 play for the second straight year, but improved on its two-win campaign of 2002-03 by tallying five victories this season.
The Cyclones wrapped up the regular season during the weekend with matches against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Both matches were scheduled to be played in early February, but had to be rescheduled because inclement weather prevented the Cyclones from traveling.
The Cyclones (5-13, 0-11 Big 12) met No. 19 Oklahoma (19-3, 8-2) Saturday in Norman, Okla., falling 7-0.
“Oklahoma is a very good team with two nationally ranked players,” ISU head coach Michele Conlon said.
Oklahoma’s Anda Perianu is the No. 5 singles player in the nation and the top singles player in the Big 12. Perianu defeated Iowa State’s Sabrina Evers 6-0, 6-1.
Several Cyclones played close matches. Sophomore Eve Soriano fell to Oklahoma’s Irina Lykina 7-6, 6-0, and fellow sophomore Charlotte Ljungkrantz lost to Amanda Pratzel 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, Ljungkrantz and freshman Jill Palen dropped an 8-5 decision to Gabby Baker and Bethany Griffin.
The Cyclones only had one day to regroup before facing Oklahoma State (7-14, 2-9) on Sunday.
“That night, we talked about our goals and what we wanted to achieve,” freshman Danielle Uscinski said. “We were more mentally prepared against Oklahoma State.”
The Cyclones fell 6-1, with the lone point coming from Uscinski, who defeated Oklahoma State’s Lauren Simmons 5-7, 7-5, 10-7.
Soriano also pushed her match to a tiebreaker, but lost to Jana Karaskova 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
The Cyclones won one of the three doubles matches and stayed close in the other two. Evers and Soriano defeated Karaskova and Katya Kolodynsa 8-6.
Uscinski and sophomore Beth Chermel lost to Ines Furtmayr and Zana Masnic 8-6, and Ljungkrantz and Palen fell 8-6 to Simmons and Jennifer Poskitt.
“We’re feeling better about how we’re all playing,” Uscinski said. “We’re more confident about the year going into the [Big 12] tournament.”
The Cyclones will travel back to Oklahoma for the eighth annual Big 12 tournament April 28-May 2 in Norman. Texas won the first six Big 12 tournaments before Oklahoma State won in 2003.
“My first season as a Cyclone was a lot of fun,” Uscinski said. “The girls on the team are so much fun, and we all get along so well.
“It was a great advantage to travel to so many different places and see what it means to be a Division I athlete. We put a lot of work into the season, and it was nice to see our hard work start to pay off.”
