Cyclones hope to snap sluggish streak versus Sooners

If the Cyclones play Oklahoma this weekend the way they played against Missouri on Wednesday — being outscored 19-1 in two games — they don’t have a prayer.

The Sooners, 35-16-1 on the year, come to Ames with a four-game winning streak and a 9-6 conference record. They are ranked in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll (No. 20) and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I poll (No. 21).

The Cyclones, 11-28 (1-11) are 2-7 at home.

The Sooner machine is powered by junior catcher Heather Scaglione. So far this season, she leads the conference in batting, home runs, RBIs, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

She is in the top three in three other hitting categories. Her .413 batting average is the first of three over .300 for the Sooners. Team batting is at a conference high .289. To top it all off, she has been named Big 12 Player of the Week four times in the last three months.

For her efforts this season on the field, she was given a slot on the American Softball Association and USA Softball list of top 25 finalists for Player of the Year. The list will be narrowed down to 10 Wednesday night, with the final three being announced May 11.

Oklahoma leads the conference in runs with 289. To help hitters bring the runners in, Oklahoma steals bases — lots of them. In 96 attempts this year, the Sooners have been successful 83 percent of the time, with their 80 steals ranking third in conference.

Norrelle Dickson, a freshman, has successfully stolen 24 bases in 52 games so far this season. Teammates Kristin Vesely and April Valdez have stolen 12 and 10, respectively.

Cyclone junior Misty Kimura is well aware of the challenge that lies in front of her and her team.

“If we can make the plays we should be making, hopefully good things will happen to us,” she said. “If we don’t do that, then we’ll fall apart.”

ISU head coach Ruth Crowe said if the Cyclones play like they did Wednesday, they won’t have a prayer.

“We’re definitely going to have to show up with a lot more effort than we did [Wednesday]. Otherwise, it’ll be a repeat,” she said.

“We just need to be better in all parts of our game. We definitely need to have better pitching and better defense just to have a chance to even be in the game.”

Crowe also said some of her players need to wake up, which she’ll try to do with a tough practice Thursday.

“Playing at the Division I level is a big jump for a lot of these kids. They don’t really get it until they have to do it and it gets pounded into them,” she said.

The series will begin Friday afternoon with game time set for 3:30 p.m. and will conclude Saturday at 11 a.m. Both games will be played at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
