LETTER: Ban alcohol along with Veishea

I’d like to commend the Iowa State administration for the decision to suspend the Veishea celebration indefinitely.

What better way to solve the Veishea dilemma than to avoid the pesky problem altogether? Veishea has proven to be nothing but a menace to the citizens and police of Ames.

While we’re at it, why not ban alcohol altogether?

It’s obvious this entire problem came about because rowdy college students have no idea how to handle themselves appropriately.

A dry Veishea wasn’t the solution, so why not a dry community?

It works on the campuses of such institutions as Brigham Young University, why couldn’t it work here?

It really is too bad students can’t come to Ames with an education in mind.

The Ames community has supported higher learning for the better part of a century, and yet students can’t adhere to zoning restrictions and couch ordinances?

Who the hell do we think we are? We can’t behave for one weekend, yet next year we think we deserve a tailgating lot next to the stadium?

Maybe now that we’ve all but lost Veishea, we’ll learn to keep our liberal-talking, body-piercing, booze-drinking, queer-advocating, curse-spouting mouths shut. Just because Mommy and Daddy foot the bill doesn’t mean we can walk around as though we own the place.

Ames used to be a nice, old-fashioned town before we ruined it.

Now it’s a modern-day Sodom or Gomorrah.

Change sure is a-comin’.
