Indian Classic ends men’s golf season
April 11, 2004
The regular season comes to a close for the ISU men’s golf team this week, giving the Cyclones one more chance to claim the team title they have been so close to all season.
For its final competition before postseason play, Iowa State will travel to Jonesboro, Ark., for the ASU Indian Classic.
Missouri and Nebraska from the Big 12 are entered in the tournament, along with host Arkansas State, North Texas and Louisiana-Monroe, a team that finished ahead of Iowa State last week.
The Cyclones have been in position to win during the final round of their last three tournaments but have only been able to claim third-, fourth- and eighth-place showings.
With the Cyclones’ recent final-round-contention experience, the team is confident that this is the time.
“The attitude of the team, the way we’re playing, I think their expectations are growing as well as my expectations are growing of them,” head coach Jay Horton said.
“They’re starting to play together and are playing really well as a team. Jeremy [Lyons] and Tyler [Swanson] are playing great leading us, and if they continue to do so, we’ll have a great chance to win every tournament we play.”
This one last chance to win a team title has the Cyclones motivated to end their season on a high note.
“We’ll treat it as another tournament, but we want to keep building on the performances we’ve had before,” Horton said.
“This is definitely a tournament that we can go down there and win, and I don’t think the guys will be satisfied if we come back without a win.
“They’re getting to that situation where they’re not just trying to compete in tournaments; they’re trying to win championships.”
The ASU Indian Classic is also the final regular-season event for senior Jeremy Lyons, who Horton said is having an outstanding season.
Lyons has recorded top-10 finishes in his last three events, including a third-place showing the last time out.
“He’s playing great; he’s full of confidence,” Horton said.
“He’s kind of the ideal player. Jeremy has been everything I’ve ever looked for in a player — hard work, determination — and he is finally putting it all together.”
