Cyclones win one, lose two in first, only home games

It wasn’t quite the outcome the ISU lacrosse club hoped for in its first and only home games of the season.
The ISU men’s lacrosse club team went 1-2 last weekend in its three games against Upper Midwest Lacrosse League opponents at the Maple-Willow-Larch fields. The games put the Cyclones’ record at 2-4 on the season.
In the Friday game, the Cyclones earned a 12-7 victory over St. Olaf.
With a 7-5 halftime lead, the Cyclones were able to put the game away with a couple of quick goals to start the second half.
Junior midfielder Kyle Andringa, president of the club, said the key to the victory was St. Olaf’s difficulty in transitioning from the defensive end to the offensive end of the field. Turnovers were also a problem for the Oles.
The Cyclones followed up the victory by taking on Minnesota-Duluth Saturday. The Bulldogs came into the game rated No. 9 in the country, and proved they were worthy of that ranking, steamrolling the Cyclones in a 17-5 victory.
“Duluth is a stellar team,” Andringa said. “They have guys at every position that play well. Every pass was to the right position, and they cut well to the goal. Every shot they took seemed to be 10 feet away from the goal.”
Despite the humiliating loss to the Bulldogs, the Cyclones came out Sunday prepared to play St. John’s (Minn.). Andringa said the Johnnies were able to put two goals in late in the game for a two-goal advantage.
Down two men because of penalties, Iowa State came back and scored with 45 seconds left, but there was not enough time for another, as the Cyclones lost 11-10.
The loss was the third one-goal loss of the season for the Cyclones.
“We have a good team that can go quite a ways,” Andringa said. “We just continue to shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties.”
The three games were the only home games of the season for the Cyclones. The team travels to Minneapolis this weekend for games against Marquette and Minnesota.
“We play every weekend from here on out,” Andringa said. “We’re pretty evenly matched with the remainder of the teams on our schedule, so we should come out with some wins.”
