Tennis team suffers pair of conference losses

The ISU women’s tennis team dropped two matches in Ames over the weekend, falling 6-1 to Colorado on Friday and 7-0 to Missouri on Saturday. The Cyclones fall to 5-8 overall and 0-6 in Big 12 play.
The Cyclones and Buffaloes (10-8, 6-4 Big 12) engaged in a marathon session Friday afternoon, with four of the six singles matches going to tiebreaker sets. Senior Sabrina Evers, playing in the No. 1 singles slot, pulled out the lone Cyclone victory, defeating Lynzee Kever 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Evers and sophomore Eve Soriano also won their doubles match, 9-8, 8-6 over Colorado’s Morgan Sall and Jessica Vanderdys.
“Sabrina had a good win against a nationally ranked player,” ISU head coach Michele Conlon said.
Kever is ranked No. 65 in the nation, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Cyclone sophomores Beth Chermel and Charlotte Ljungkrantz, along with freshman Danielle Uscinski, took their matches to tiebreakers. Ljungkrantz lost to Colorado’s Kristy Randono 6-0, 7-6 (9-7), 10-7. Chermel fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to Martina Sedivec, and Uscinski was defeated by Sall 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Cyclones had less success Saturday afternoon, as they were swept by the Missouri Tigers (12-8, 5-5 Big 12). The Tigers took all three doubles matches to score the first point.
“We need to focus a lot more on doubles,” Cyclone freshman Jill Palen said. “We get off to good starts, but we’ve got to work on finishing points.”
Palen and Ljungkrantz lost their doubles match 8-2 to Missouri’s Hana Kraftova and Mary Barry.
The Cyclones did have some close matches. In No. 2 singles, ISU sophomore Eve Soriano lost to Katka Sevcikova 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-5. In the No. 6 slot, Missouri’s Lucie Ruskova defeated Ljungkrantz 6-7 (7-2), 6-3.
“Eve played very good singles,” Conlon said. “Danielle and Beth made good progress in doubles. The team didn’t give up at all, and that was a great sign.”
Palen credited some of the team’s Saturday struggles to the long play on Friday.
“I think a lot of us were tired from the long matches [Friday],” Palen said. “We’ve been playing every weekend without much time off.”
Conlon downplayed the effects of Friday’s play.
“The team is in decent shape,” Conlon said. “I wouldn’t say it was a huge factor.”
Iowa State wraps up the regular season with three matches next weekend. The Baylor Bears come to Ames on Friday, with play beginning at 10 a.m. Iowa State then travels to Oklahoma for matches against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, which were rescheduled from February when a snowstorm prevented the Cyclones from traveling.
