LETTER: Serve the public, bust the parties
April 18, 2004
I am not going to talk about the police reactions and rioting that took place this weekend. However, I would like to mention how this all could have been prevented.
This party that started everything should have been shut down long before it reached its out-of-control state.
Being less than one block away from Campustown, police should have seen the party and put an end to it. There are dozens of police officers driving around the entire city, yet they drive by houses with 20-plus people standing in the front yard holding Solo cups.
Since Campustown is the largest congregation of students and visitors, there should have been a larger police presence and more enforcement in the surrounding areas.
Had this party been taken care of at 10 or 11, when it was in the early stages, the eventual results could have quite possibly been avoided.
It is nice that the police officers generally let us go about our business as long as we don’t get out of hand, but being nice and serving the public are two entirely different things.
