Cyclone softball drops doubleheader in Stillwater

Another day, two more conference losses for the Cyclones.

The ISU softball team took a road trip to Stillwater, Okla., Saturday and came back emptyhanded, dropping two games to Oklahoma State. Saturday’s game was postponed due to inclement weather, so the teams were forced to play a doubleheader Sunday.

In game one, both teams were unable to put runs on the board until the fourth inning when Iowa State’s Ashley Killeen committed an error to give the Cowgirls their first run. Two plays later, a single brought home a second run.

In the fifth, the Cyclones had an opportunity to score, but Ashley Core was picked off in her attempt to steal third base. That ended the Cyclone offense for the remainder of the game, and Oklahoma State held on to win 2-0. Pitcher Katie Reichling took the loss to drop her season record to 0-6.

Alyssa Ransom got the nod in game two for the Cyclones, and the Cowgirls quickly jumped on her, scoring one in the first and another in the second. Iowa State finally snapped its four-game run drought by putting two on the board in the second.

After a scoreless third, the Cowgirls increased their lead by three with a pair of home runs in the fourth. The first was a solo shot into left followed two plays later by a two-run shot, also into left field.

Ransom would get out of the inning, but not until the game had been put of reach for the Cyclones. Iowa State added seven more hits for a season-high total of 12 in the following innings, but it wasn’t enough and Oklahoma State took the second game 5-2. Ransom pitched a complete game and added the loss to her record to make it 7-12 on the season. She walked three and struck out five in her losing effort.

Senior Julia Lindsey said she couldn’t express her frustration enough.

“It’s really frustrating. When we go up to bat, we’re either overaggressive or looking for a walk, and we end up shooting ourselves in the foot,” she said. “It’s like we end up beating ourselves.”

Iowa State will take a break from conference play when it travels to Cedar Falls to take on Northern Iowa on Wednesday. The Cyclones shut out the Panthers April 1 in Ames.
