Cyclones drop doubleheader

Misty Kimura’s sixth home run of the season wasn’t enough to save the Cyclones, as they dropped both games in a Big 12 doubleheader against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be a weekend series on Saturday and Sunday. The teams decided to play consecutive games on Saturday to avoid severe weather forecasted for Sunday.

The Cyclones came into the weekend off a 4-0 home loss to intrastate rival Iowa.

Texas had won two of its last three games prior to traveling to Ames.

Alyssa Ransom held Texas in check at the plate for the first four innings, holding the Longhorns scoreless in that span.

Wynter Turner broke the pitching streak with a double to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Turner tallied the first Texas run of the game, scoring off a bases-loaded single by Melanie Jarrett. The Cyclones escaped the inning down only 0-1 with an out at home followed by a double play.

Iowa State answered Turner’s run with Kimura’s two-run homer that scored Heather McLatchie.

Texas’ Tina Boutelle led off the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2 with a solo home run.

The Longhorns sealed the first game victory with Chez Sievers’ three-run homer to left center, claiming a 5-2 victory over the Cyclones. Ransom struck out seven in seven innings pitched.

Iowa State was successful at the plate with 11 hits, but struggled to score runs, stranding 12 runners on base.

The Longhorns set the tone for game two with Tina Boutelle’s home run in the opening inning. Texas continued to gain momentum in the third inning when Boutelle scored and Turner increased the lead to 4-0 with a two-run homer, scoring Amber Hall.

Alexis Garcia ran in on a sacrifice at the top of the fourth making the Texas lead 5-0.

The Cyclones finally scored in the bottom of the seventh when Julia Lindsey hit a double to score Ashley Core. The Cyclones would never recover, though, as the Longhorns took the win 5-1.

After the two losses to Texas, Iowa State’s record falls to 10-25 (1-8 Big 12). Texas improves to 22-17 (4-7).

Iowa State will continue Big 12 Conference play when it takes on No. 17 Nebraska at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
