Cyclones fall hard to Baylor

The ISU women’s tennis team’s losing streak continued Friday as it fell 7-0 to Baylor.

The Cyclones, who haven’t won a match since a March 27 victory over St. Louis, dropped to 5-11 overall and 0-9 in Big 12 play.

Friday’s match was the final home match for Cyclone senior Sabrina Evers, who has played at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles all season for Iowa State. Evers and sophomore Eve Soriano lost 8-4 to Carolin Walter and Daria Potapova. Walter defeated Evers 6-2, 6-3 in singles play.

“My four years at ISU went by very fast,” Evers said. “I’ve had a lot of really good experiences.”

“The most difficult thing you have to do as a coach is say good-bye to your seniors,” ISU head coach Michele Conlon said.

Friday was the first Senior Day in five years the Cyclones had been able to play outside, Conlon said.

“Being outside helps a lot,” Conlon said. “More fans show up as people walking between classes stop in to watch.”

The Cyclones just couldn’t come up with an answer to Baylor.

“They didn’t overpower us, but they did outrally us,” Conlon said. “Our players gave a tremendous effort, and it was good to have that effort at our last home match.

“Jill [Palen] and Beth [Chermel] battled very well and had a good mentality.”

Palen fell to Daniela Covello 7-5, 6-3, and Chermel lost to Klara Zrustova 6-0, 6-1.

After the match, the Cyclones prepared to travel to Oklahoma for matches against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State during the weekend. The trip was originally scheduled for February, but inclement weather prevented the Cyclones from traveling.

Oklahoma has two nationally ranked players, Conlon said.

“They have a great new facility that will host the Big 12 tournament just a week later,” she said. “If our players can’t get excited about that, they can’t get excited.”
