LETTER: Thanks for the pepper spray: Part II
April 19, 2004
I would like to express my disappointment of this Saturday night and early Sunday morning event.
I awoke to a nice dose of tear gas as it entered my window while I was sleeping.
I was disgusted with the way the police have been reacting with things outside by throwing tear gas near the residence halls.
Your job as an officer of this city is to keep the lives of the citizens safe.
When you have your officers throw tear gas where it can get into the residence halls, you take away this right for me to feel safe in my home.
You can keep the tear gas on Welch; bringing the tear gas to the residence halls where the temperature forces us to open our windows is very irresponsible.
Keep the tear gas away from the halls. I know several people who cannot go to their rooms because of the gas.
I do not appreciate my home being invaded.
I have called the police station several times; however, the lines are busy with phone calls.
I assume this is from people in the residence halls who are unable to sleep and breathe from the tear gas.
I thank you for having trained police officers to serve us; however, I do not appreciate those who think all college students and the other people who attended Veishea are animals and do not deserve the same rights as others in the community. I am more ashamed of our Ames Police than proud.
Thank you for your time. Thank you for the gas.
If I have any respiratory problems, I will be sure to call the police — as with all of the other sleeping UDA residents who woke coughing and wheezing.
