LETTER: Don’t forget the March for Life
April 27, 2004
For the first time in 10 years there was a march in Washington this past Sunday full of women proclaiming their pro-choice decisions. Congratulations on such an accomplishment. I think it is excellent for opinions to be heard.
However, I would like readers to know that for 30 consecutive years, thousands of people have marched through Washington supporting a pro-life position.
The March for Life is an annual event where thousands gather in Washington on Jan. 22 (remembering the date when abortion was legalized in 1973) to demonstrate their opinions against abortion.
This event has been going on since 1974 and has never been interrupted because its supporters are greatly committed to their cause. Officially, this march on April 25 was to show support for women having the legal right to choose whether or not to kill their unborn babies. In the article in Monday’s Daily, April 26, this march for choice was described more as a march against Bush.
It appears as though the members involved were speaking up against President Bush instead of proclaiming what they were essentially there for. It is possible that many people, not just women, attended this march because they disagreed with Bush and his opinions on various topics, whether they cared about abortion or not.ÿ
This article does not mention the March for Life, but it does point out the few people there dressed in black protesting this march, calling it a “death march.”
The article also does not include what the members of this march were exactly fighting for, just that their rights were being weakened and would soon evaporate if Bush were elected for a second term.
I wonder if this march was really about standing up for what many believe about abortion, or was it just a riot against President Bush and the Republicans?
