LETTER: Gay marriage won’t destroy the culture
March 3, 2004
Jim Madison’s March 2 letter to the editor (“Amendment would legitimize amorality”) has done us all an incredible disservice by voicing his wild, erratic and unsubstantiated opinion.
Madison’s original claim that homosexuality is immoral quickly dissolves into a rambling tirade of people and groups that bother him, including: illegal immigrants, women in the workplace, those who gained equal rights through constitutional action, and of course, gays.
“The Equal Rights Amendment was kind of stupid,” said Madison. Maybe for an affluent white male, equal rights is “stupid,” but for the vast majority of Americans this amendment provides the protection from governmental abuse and ensures equal rights for all.
Equal rights, a concept often adamantly claimed but never achieved in America, ensures all of the nation’s children a bright and equal opportunity for future.
Madison’s tirade then extends to judges, affirmative action (which, by the way, does not make discrimination illegal), and mothers who choose to raise their children (what a silly concept!).
Unfortunately, by the time I got to this point in the letter, I had already had enough of this pointless, destructive, “hate everyone” attitude.
Madison concludes his piece by claiming gay marriage will wreck our culture like it has “wrecked other cultures.”
What other cultures have been destroyed by homosexuals?
