LETTER: Iraqi casualties ignored at vigil
March 24, 2004
While I would like to commend Time For Peace for recognizing our 581 fallen soldiers, it’s too bad they didn’t recognize others that have died in Iraq.
For instance, the 3,000 Yazidi victims of Saddam’s genocide campaigns, or how about 100,000 Iraqi Kurds that were the victims of Saddam’s chemical weapons, or the 250,000 people, mostly Shiites, killed over years of brutal repression at the hands of Saddam’s ruthless military and secret police, and finally the over 1.5 million people (mostly Iranian and Kuwaiti) killed in two civil wars, four foreign wars and various smaller struggles over the 35 years of Saddam’s reign.
I suppose it’s understandable, though, that as Americans we only recognize our own. The Iraqis, however, have a few hundred-thousand more deaths to mourn.
