Last shot for athletes to advance
March 5, 2004
ISU track and field athletes hope they won’t be left wondering about nationals after this weekend.
There are some ISU athletes who have set provisional marks for the national indoor track meet, but no one has qualified automatically yet.
The NCAA Qualifier will be the last chance for NCAA tracksters to qualify. Both the Cyclone men and women hope to qualify athletes for nationals.
“We have four that have a chance at nationals,” women’s coach Dick Lee said. “Rebecca Williams has to run one tenth to two-and-a-half tenths faster than her provisional mark to make it to nationals in the 60-meter hurdles. This meet will hopefully get her there. Sheba Clarke is sitting in good shape to qualify, but will compete [in this meet] to improve her ranking in the 60-meter [dash].”
Clarke wants to finish her indoor career in stellar fashion.
“I am 12th on the provisional list in the 60 meters, but I need a stronger race,” Clarke said. “I would love to make All-American.”
Lee said he is 90 percent sure Ada Anderson will qualify for nationals, but she will still compete in the 800-meter run at the qualifying meet to gain more experience.
“Agata Kosuda also has a chance to qualify,” Lee said. “She needs to jump 20 inches farther [in the long jump] or around eight inches farther in the triple jump.”
Last year, senior thrower Susan Sherman made it to nationals in the indoor and outdoor seasons. Lee said she is not going to compete in order to devote all her focus on the upcoming outdoor season.
“It isn’t realistic that she will qualify for the indoor nationals,” Lee said. “She would have to improve by three feet.”
Men’s coach Steve Lynn said the men with the best shot to make it to nationals are the jumpers and throwers.
“Daniel Kaczmarczyk and Tony Douglas will compete in the long jump. Jamal Salahuddin (shot put) needs to throw over 60 feet, and he is capable of that to make it to nationals,” Lynn said.
“Abraham Rotich will concentrate on the 800 while the [1,600-meter relay] team also has an outside shot at nationals. But most of the guys will be getting ready for the outdoor season.”
Boyington, who is part of the 1,600-meter relay team, feels confident that his relay team will advance to nationals.
“Our goal has always been to make it to nationals,” Boyington said. “If we compete and run with those teams, we have a great shot. I am not planning on this being my last indoor meet. We are going to make nationals.”
The NCAA Qualifier meet will run all day Saturday at Lied Recreation Center.
