Idaho State women, Georgia men are NIT opponents
March 14, 2004
The Idaho State women and Georgia men will invade Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday for a National Invitation Tournament doubleheader.
Both ISU basketball teams fell short of the NCAA Tournament this season but will open their postseasons at home. Fans can watch both games – the ISU women at 6 p.m. and the ISU men at 8:30 p.m. – without leaving Hilton Coliseum by purchasing one $15 ticket, available this week from the ISU athletic ticket office. The one-ticket admission is a change from what ISU officials said Friday. A separate admission for each game would have been too complicated, the ISU athletic department announced Sunday.
If either team wins, Hilton Coliseum is available for second-round games Friday. All women’s National Invitation Tournament games are played at campus sites, while the men’s games are played at campus sites until the field is narrowed to four teams, who compete at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The Cyclone men (17-12, 7-9 Big 12) will host Georgia at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Bulldogs, 16-13 overall and 7-9 in the Southeastern Conference, boast two regular-season wins over Kentucky, the NCAA Tournament’s top overall seed. Georgia had hoped those wins would make a strong statement for its inclusion as an at-large team to the NCAA Tournament, but the Bulldogs were left out.
Iowa State and Georgia shared no common opponents. Both teams struggled on the road during the season, each winning just once away from home – Iowa State at Drake in December and Georgia over Kentucky in January.
The Idaho State Bengals (20-8, 11-3 Big Sky) fell just short of an NCAA Tournament berth Saturday when they lost 66-62 to Montana in the Big Sky championship game. The only common opponent for the Bengals and Cyclones (15-14, 7-9 Big 12) was Colorado. The Buffaloes beat Idaho State 95-65 in November and narrowly defeated Iowa State in both their conference games this season.
Tickets are currently on sale at www.cyclones.com. The ISU athletic ticket office, located on the west side of the Jacobson Building just north of Jack Trice Stadium, will open at 8 a.m. Monday to take orders in person or over the phone at (888) ISU-CYCLONE. The ticket office will remain open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. National Cyclone Club members who have already pre-ordered tickets before Sunday can pick up their tickets starting Monday at noon. The pre-ordered tickets are valid for both of Wednesday’s games.
A win for the Cyclone men would merit a second-round matchup with the winner of Wednesday’s Florida State-Wichita State game. The 21-10 Shockers, whom Iowa State defeated 76-65 in Ames in the opening round of last season’s postseason National Invitation Tournament, will host the 18-13 Seminoles at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Iowa State faced six of the teams in the field this season, including four Big 12 teams. The Cyclones split with Nebraska, Colorado and Missouri, lost single games to Oklahoma and Virginia (both on the road), and defeated Iowa at home. Last year, the Hawkeyes ended Iowa State’s season with a 54-53 win in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Hilton. This year, through, the two teams are on opposite sides of the bracket. The Hawkeyes will play St. Louis on Tuesday in St. Charles, Mo.
If the Cyclone women win, they would face the winner of Wednesday’s game in Xavier, Ohio, between the 17-12 Musketeers and 21-8 Miami (Ohio). Iowa State faced three of the teams in the women’s National Invitation Tournament field this season, beating Big 12 opponent Nebraska in two of three meetings and losing at home to Washington and on the road to Drake.
Also announced Sunday was the women’s NCAA Tournament field. Iowa State will host a first- and second-round subregional March 21 and 23. No. 2 seed Purdue will play No. 15 seed St. Francis (PA) and No. 7 seed Villanova will face No. 10 seed Mississippi on Sunday, with the winner to square off Tuesday. The times for those games will be announced Monday.
