LETTER: Morality key to society’s laws

I am absolutely astounded that anyone would claim the president “shouldn’t legislate morality” (“President shouldn’t legislate morality,” letter to the editor, March 1).

If the government does not “legislate morality,” then there can be no laws against theft, adultery, fraud or anything else society considers reprehensible. Furthermore, it is logically necessary for governments to “pass legislature based on moral principles.”

If these laws are to be universally applied and accepted, then they must also be universally true for everyone — and a standard put in place by a common creator is far more universal than any human opinion.
