LETTER: Daily changed letter intent with title
March 9, 2004
As I opened Friday’s edition of the Iowa State Daily, I noticed that the letter I submitted for publication had been retitled by the Daily opinion editor. While this did not surprise me, the new title, “Truth is in the eye of the beholder,” failed to represent my letter’s intent.
It had a catchy ring, but it portrayed the exact opposite meaning conveyed by the letter.
Truth is not in the eye of the beholder! If truth is in the eye of the beholder, it ceases to be truth. Jesus’ claim, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” is not true for simply those who believe it.
It is either true for all or true for none.
The Daily reserves the right to edit any letter. However, to alter a letter’s meaning is unacceptable by any professional or ethical standards.
