No. 7 Cowboys make Iowa State unwelcome in Dallas
March 12, 2004
DALLAS – Friday’s Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal was played at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, but for Cyclone fans, it felt like Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
The ISU men’s basketball team fell to Oklahoma State 83-75 in front of an endless sea of Cowboy orange.
Oklahoma State’s Joey Graham burned the Cyclones for a game-high 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting, tying the Big 12 Tournament shooting percentage record set by Cyclone Curtis Stinson the day before.
“[Graham] was unbelievable,” ISU senior guard Jake Sullivan said. “He’s going to be a big, big-time player next year in the league. He’s just been absolutely unreal.”
Stinson’s performance was a complete U-turn from his record-setting performance against Kansas State as he shot only 3-of-11 from the floor for seven points. Stinson said Oklahoma State’s hand-checking defense contributed to his shooting woes. ISU head coach Wayne Morgan declined comment about the Cowboys’ defense of Stinson.
“I could go into an area where I could get fined, and I don’t want to get fined,” Morgan said.
The Cyclones trailed most of the game but rallied to tie it at 59 with 7:43 remaining on an alley-oop from freshman Will Blalock to senior Marcus Jefferson.
“He told me to just throw it up toward the rim and he’d go get it, so that’s what I did,” Blalock said.
The Cyclone momentum didn’t last long, however, as the Cowboys scored a quick five points to take a 64-59 lead. Oklahoma State continued to make shot after shot in the waning minutes of the game, giving Iowa State little hope for another comeback.
“You have to give them credit, because when we did tie it up at 59, they made some big shots from a distance with us on them,” Morgan said. “That’s what being a champion, which they are, is about.”
The Cyclones nearly cut the OSU lead to two with under a minute to go, but a 3-point attempt by Sullivan rimmed out.
“It was a great shot,” Sullivan said. “I made a lot of shots and that one just didn’t go in. I couldn’t have shot it any better; it felt good, it just rolled out.”
Senior forward Jackson Vroman tied his career high with 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sullivan chipped in 19 points, and junior Jared Homan recorded his second double-double of the tournament with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Guard John Lucas wasn’t too overshadowed by Graham’s performance as he threw in 23 points of his own, including a couple of the big shots down the stretch to seal the OSU victory.
“To have a point guard like Lucas – guards control the game,” Morgan said. “Not only can he run a team and distribute the ball, he can also make big shots.”
With Friday’s game being the last Big 12 contest for his seniors, Morgan said he couldn’t be happier with his team’s production this season.
“I am extremely proud of my team’s effort and my team’s growth during the course of the year,” Morgan said. “Our kids in this tournament played as hard as they could, and that’s all you can ask of anybody.”
Vroman said the Cyclones wouldn’t have accomplished what they did this year without Morgan.
“Coach Morgan has done a tremendous job for this team and this program,” Vroman said. “He’s stuck with everyone here through every hard time, and this program wouldn’t be where it is without him at the helm.”
Even with all hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth dashed with Friday’s loss, Sullivan said the 17-12 Cyclones will play as though they were in the Big Dance in the National Invitation Tournament.
“We’re going out there to win it – the NIT obviously – and we’re going to work hard the next couple of weeks,” Sullivan said.
NIT and Women’s National Invitation Tournament games will take place Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum, ISU officials said Friday. The Cyclone women will be playing at 5:30 p.m. with the men following at 8:30 p.m. The opponents for both games will be released Sunday.
