LETTER: Jesus’ ethnicity not important
March 9, 2004
I read the front page article in the March 5 Daily titled “What did Jesus look like?” and it made me think.
Having grown up in a middle class white family, I wasn’t taken aback at all when I saw Jesus portrayed as a Caucasian man in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion.”
It is a curious and unknown issue, that of Jesus’ physical appearance.
The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized that the issue regarding this debate is this — who cares?
Maybe Jesus was of African, European, Middle Eastern or any other descent, but really, isn’t it so much more important to debate what Jesus said rather than what he looked like?
I applaud the students of Iowa State who, for years on end have wrestled tirelessly over the issue of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Without doubt, letters will continue to be posted regularly on the opinion page of the Daily, and hopefully, they will continue to be well-thought-out, respectful and focused on the issues that really matter.
