LETTER: Jesus’ image goes beyond Caucasian
March 8, 2004
The Western/Caucasian Christian portrayal of Jesus displayed on the front page of the Daily on Friday, March 5 was not only surprising, but also disappointing.
Next to the headline, “What did Jesus look like?” this picture seems a clear statement of the Daily’s answer for this question. The article would have been much better served if this illustration were a compilation of a number of different ethnic portrayals of Jesus, rather than this predictable, biased, and probably inaccurate depiction (as your article nicely states).
I find it unfortunate that the Daily is so susceptible to propagating the Western Christian ideology as evidenced by this conspicuous, subjective illustration positioned next to an article on how the “physical appearance [of Jesus] remains a mystery.”
The Daily should attempt diversification on this issue (both in its articles and its illustrations) in an attempt to better represent the student body which it serves.
