LETTER: Students cheat themselves of class

Something I first noticed last term, and really notice lately, is that the end of the class period is starting to be dictated by the students rather than the teacher. When the students realize class is close to being over, or when there’s five minutes left in the scheduled period, basically everyone starts to pack up and drown out what’s being said in the front of the classroom.

This is an effective way to end class early, and I used to pull the same routine in my high school, but I wasn’t paying to be there.

I realize that most people around here are busy, but the information being missed seemingly outweighs the three minutes gained.

And, in the majority of cases, that time will be spent sitting in your next class waiting for it to begin.

This kind of disturbance is similar to going to class to sleep, or to do reading for the class you are in — both completely counterproductive in my mind.

Even if you don’t buy my argument, surely you can realize that it is just plain rude to the professor.

I’m not trying to tell anyone what to do, I’m just asking you to think about the logic behind collectively disrupting the class.
