Track teams have one final tuneup before Big 12 meet
February 20, 2004
Most teams and coaches will tell you they never look past a game or opponent.
That’s not the case for the ISU men’s and women’s track and field teams this weekend, as neither will be sending very many athletes to the UNI Open in Cedar Falls.
Both teams are mainly focusing on gearing up for the Big 12 Indoor Championships, held Feb. 27-28 in Lincoln, Neb.
“We are only going to bring around 10 kids to this super low-key meet,” women’s coach Dick Lee said.
“Mostly the young and walk-on kids that need some race experience [will go].”
Lee said that since the majority of his women are going to the Big 12 meet, they will not be going to Northern Iowa.
“The majority of our kids are going to take the day off and get ready for the conference meet, which will be key,” Lee said. “They will mostly just get some quality work in and keep practicing hard.”
Men’s track coach Steve Lynn will use the smaller meet to give the men the opportunity to do different things.
“We will only be bringing around 20 people to the meet,” Lynn said.
“James Lopes will run the 60 [meters], which he hasn’t run since the second meet of the year. Daniel Zelik will be running some new events. Also, some sprinters will run in the 200s and 400s, which they normally don’t.”
Other teams competing in the UNI Open include Northern Iowa, Wisconsin and a number of Division III teams. Lee said the competition will be decent for the ISU runners, jumpers and throwers who travel.
Lynn said the meet will be another good chance to get a race in before the Big 12 meet.
“It will be good for us because there are some things that you can’t duplicate in practice,” Lynn said.
“It gives us the opportunity to freshen up before the conference meet. I expect a number of guys to step up and have a good meet. We expect every guy who goes to have a good meet.”
Lee said the meet will not be a tuneup for his team.
“We are mostly just focused and getting ready for the Big 12,” Lee said.
