LETTER: Dirt Poor Dining missed the mark
February 23, 2004
The Iowa State Daily touts itself as not just a college newspaper, but also a training ground for future, professional journalists. Unfortunately, the professional component of the Daily is too often ignored.
This was never more evident than the Feb. 19 review of Le’s Vietnamese Restaurant.
I am not a journalist, but I am sure there has to be a more tactful manner that can be used when reviewing a dining experience that did not meet the reviewer’s expectations.
Instead, what the readers were “treated” to a lengthy diatribe from two grumpy individuals who seemed to have chips on their shoulders when they walked through the door.
Even when they did have something positive to say about the service, it was immediately followed by a sophomoric comment that reminded the readers not only that these reviewers did not like the restaurant — but it also spoke volumes about the lack of journalistic ability and integrity possessed by the two reviewers.
I am unable to speak to the motivation of these two individuals. Maybe they thought they were being clever.
However, the authors and the editors of the Daily need to keep in mind there is a difference between a restaurant review and a blatant attempt to destroy a business.
In this case, I believe they chose the latter.
I have dined at Le’s on several occasions and my experiences there do not even remotely resemble the experiences of these two individuals.
Therefore, I would like to offer the reviewers two bits of advice.
First, if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, choose a different day to do your review.
Second, move the bed away from the wall.
