LETTER: Commercials bare as much as Janet

Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” has apparently caused quite a stir, even prompting an FCC investigation of CBS and MTV.

I noticed this last night when it was the top story in the nation on two back-to-back CNN shows.

But I also see quite a number of major problems surrounding the incident. The lyrics “…gonna have you naked by the end of this song” coinciding with part of Jackson’s costume “malfunctioning” and her wearing excessively large-nipple-concealing jewelry just seems a little too ironic.

Yeah, I’m sure it was an accident.

Good move to apologize everyone, but you know and we all know it was a stunt.

So who cares if it was? I watched the halftime show, and although I wasn’t offended, apparently a lot of people were. I didn’t think much of it, and maybe this can be chalked up to my “MTV Generation” upbringing.

But didn’t Lil’ Kim do the same thing in ’99? And wasn’t she just following the tradition of past MTV Award show scene-stealers who bared their assets — Cher, Marilyn Manson, Rose McGowan and Prince? And didn’t Diana Ross think it was a hoot?

But that was on the MTV Awards, so maybe the issue is that this bit of flesh was on CBS. Let’s keep in mind what else was going on during this primetime slot.

“It’s been sex jokes, flatulence jokes and tripping old people,” quipped Chuck Carlberg, CEO of local advertising agency Rives Carlberg, in reference to advertisements.

But since all those multi-million dollar ads advocating everything from alcohol to erectile dysfunction correction are just commercials, I guess it can be overlooked.

“Bud owned the first half,” Carlberg said. “The game was so exciting the second half it may have taken away from the commercials.”

It’s nice to know that we’re living in a time when our rights to free speech are in danger as media conglomerates slowly and sneakily try to take over the industry.

I, for one, think it’s nice to see a little bit of exposure can go such a long way.
