Sophomore Nate Gallick scored a huge upset Friday as the ISU wrestling team knocked off No. 9 Oklahoma, 19-16, in Norman, Okla.

The 141-pounder had the biggest win of the day when he squeaked by No. 1 Teyon Ware, 3-2, to start the second half of the Cyclones’ Big 12 opener.

Neither wrestler scored in the first period, but Gallick found himself down 1-0 heading into the third period. Gallick tied the match with an escape and took a permanent lead 3-1 with a take down. The win propelled Gallick to a 15-4 record this season and handed Ware his first loss of the year.

“It was a great match; Gallick wrestled as good as I’ve ever seen him wrestle,” ISU head coach Bobby Douglas said.

The Cyclone win came courtesy of a huge ISU rally. Iowa State took five of the last six matches to come back from a 13-0 deficit.

Cyclone brothers Travis and Trent Paulson both notched wins during the rally. Trent, ranked fourth in the nation at 149 pounds, beat 11th-ranked Sooner Jeff Ecklof 4-2. Travis recorded a victory by forfeit at 157 pounds.

Nick Passolano scored Iowa State’s final points with a 9-3 victory at 165 pounds, putting Iowa State ahead 19-13.

Oklahoma State earns its ranking

The seventh-ranked Cyclone team was able to win only two matches on its way to a 27-6 shellacking at the hands of top-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., Saturday.

The Cowboys dominated the Cyclones from the start, winning the meet’s first four matches and taking an early 14-0 lead.

Douglas said although Iowa State did not wrestle as well as he’d like, his team still wrestled a good match. Injuries are still hampering the Cyclones.

“We’re still banged up,” Douglas said early Sunday morning.

Two Cyclone wrestlers were upset by unranked Cowboys in Oklahoma State’s victory. Iowa State’s Scott Coleman and Grant Nakamura, ranked 16th and 17th respectively, both took losses, silencing any hopes of an ISU comeback. Coleman lost the heavyweight match 6-3 to Oklahoma State’s William Gruenwald.

Another big Oklahoma State upset came at the expense of Iowa State’s top-ranked wrestler, Zach Roberson, as he lost his match at 133 pounds to fifth-ranked Johnny Thompson.

The loss dropped the Cyclones’ record to 13-4 this season and 1-1 in the Big 12. The Cyclones host second-ranked Nebraska at 7 p.m. Thursday at Hilton Coliseum.
