Terry’s ISU football career is finished
February 5, 2004
It was not all happy news for Iowa State on signing day Wednesday as head coach Dan McCarney announced that medical problems would end quarterback Waye Terry’s career at Iowa State.
“It was a problem that was detected in the Missouri game. It went way back, long before his career began at Iowa State,” McCarney said.
In a telephone interview, Terry declined to give details about his medical problem. Terry was one of three Cyclones who saw action at quarterback for the Cyclones last season. He accumulated 489 total yards and passed for two touchdowns last season.
“I thank God, before there was any serious permanent damage done, our doctors detected it,” McCarney said. “His playing days at Iowa State are over and we’re sorry about that.”
Terry said he still plans to stay close to the ISU football team.
“I’ll probably student coach or something,” Terry said. “I’m not for sure what I want to do right now. I’m kind of just taking it day-by-day.”
“We’re thrilled that he’ll be around with us helping out the football team and hopefully getting his degree,” McCarney said.
After undergoing tests concerning a possible genetic problem a couple of weeks ago, doctors recommended Terry end his football career with the Cyclones.
“The cards have been dealt, so I had no chance but to deal with it,” Terry said. “I’m still kind of in shock, believing that I can’t play and stuff, but it’s nothing I can dwell on. I can’t do anything about it now. It isn’t easy for me — I really had no choice but not to play.”
