Cyclones dominate home track meet

The ISU track and field teams added to an eventful weekend for Cyclone sports fans as they dominated the competition in the ISU Open at the Lied Recreation Center Friday and Saturday.

On the men’s side, junior Tony Stewart finished second in the men’s weight throw with a throw of 57-9.

Dan Taylor, Andy Hadden, Craig Cartier and Kyle Rasmussen won the men’s distance medley relay.

“[The win is] good in two ways,” Taylor said.

“One, it’s good for confidence. And second, it gives us something to shoot for at the conference meet. Last year, we finished 11th overall at the Big 12 meet. Everyone here is hungry for the conference meet in February.”

Cartier also dominated the men’s 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:25.86, and Taylor won the men’s mile with a time of 4:09.95.

“It felt great. I stuck in there, made my move, and it was over,” Cartier said.

“We had a lot of good distance times today, especially Taylor. Hopefully, we can come in here in a few weeks, and do well.”

For the women, senior Susan Sherman dominated the throwing events and won the weight throw with a toss of 61-1 3/4.

“I’m not totally satisfied,” Sherman said.

“We lifted hard all week. We usually taper off the week [prior to the meet]. I’m glad I threw over 60 feet. I’m glad I won the event.”

Sherman also finished first in the women’s shot put with a throw of 47-8.

Freshman Sara Boisen placed first in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:23.74.

“It’s the first time I ran [the 600-yard],” Boisen said. “I didn’t know what to expect going into it. I don’t normally work out with the 800 girls. I train mostly for 400s, so this is a bit longer for me.”

Rebecca Williams received second place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49 seconds. She had the same time as Lindenwood’s Devitta Shepherd, but was ruled second by photo finish.

“Her advantage was that [she leaned forward at the line],” Williams said. “I don’t care about places. I’m always looking to improve.”

Sheba Clarke won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.47 seconds.

“I wish I could have provisionally qualified for nationals. Hey, I still have a long season in front of me,” Clarke said. “I felt like I was blessed all day… God is always on my side.”

Women’s sprint coach Scott Roberts was excited after the meet and praised his team’s effort.

“We’re still sharpening up as we get into February. Sheba Clarke did very well. She’s getting consistency. She’ll be a force in the conference meet,” Roberts said.

“I would like to especially mention Sara Boisen. She’s a freshman running the 600-yard dash, an event she has never run before. [Her time] would have placed her at the Big 12 [Championships] last year. I’m really excited about her potential.”

Men’s head coach Steve Lynn summed up a successful day for both men’s and women’s track.

“We had quite a few wins. Overall, we’re really pleased. Some guys were injured and we need to get them back. We compete to win and to get better. Today, we did both,” Lynn said.

“The distance guys went through a hard time with cross country. Today, Dan and Cartier led the way, winning the distance medley. Dan looked great in the mile. Cartier looked like a champ. There’s a lot of good positives from this meet. We are way better than last year at this time.”
